relaxation

These past two weeks have been a bit nutty. I finished parent teacher conferences, had close friends in town, and celebrated my birthday. So good, but exhausting nonetheless. I’d love to soak in this tub and then curl up in a robe on this chair…

p.s. I was surprised that the chair is vintage, reupholstered in “Tides” by Perennials. So clever in a damp bathroom!

living room progress

Now that I am not buying old chairs left and right, we actually have space in our living room to, well, live. And when you only have about 600 square feet, that is a very good thing. Our living room has been a work-in-progress since we unpacked the first box but since re-claiming all this space, I have been trying to really pull it all together.

Our biggest acquisition was two new armchairs (I know, I know) but they are here to stay. We had them reupholstered in a pale yellow and cream diamond woven fabric that reads like a solid. They are so comfortable and easy to curl up in, which was a must.

This weekend I will be working on a few other things, including finishing my diamond tufted ottoman, sewing some new pillow covers, and shopping the flower district for some little indoor plants. I’ll be back to share more on Monday!

Happy Weekend! xo

shop furbish

If you need some color in your world, head over to the new Furbish site…

I love the cobalt blue in the ikat on these chairs. Same as the skinnies waiting in my cart!

oh yes, the chair

THANK you for your sweet comments and emails. Change is good.

So, I was asked about progress on the slipper chair and… well… it was underway up until the holidays. And it’s been giving me the evil eye ever since.

Once sanded and stripped down, I replaced the bottom seat fabric and painted the frame.

I affixed the fabric, a taupey gray cotton velvet, to the bottom cotton covered ledge and pushed it back into place. Surprisingly, only two nails hold it down. This chair is old.

Then I stapled down the front, starting on the sides where the fabric was folded over against the frame, and worked my way to the middle, keeping it as taught as possible.

And then trimmed off the excess. Voila!

The back and arm piece (not pictured) is all ready to be stapled except I’ve run into a bit of a snafu. There are five buttons that tuft the back BUT the fabric is too thick for the THREE types of buttons I have tried.

Any ideas?

one year (and a half)

My hiatus was longer than expected and I contemplated ending it all together, but let’s try again, shall we?

I started this little blog last August. It began while sitting in the airport, frustrated with myself that I was not doing anything to pursue my passion for interiors and anxious for a way to exercise creativity. I was apprehensive about sharing too much (and still am) but was pretty determined to make something of my chair collection. Well, while I still do love chairs, I have realized over this year that my goals have changed a bit.

Call me lazy, but I am tired of having ugly chairs sitting around waiting to reach their potential. It’s too bad I can’t wiggle my nose and make my visions happen instantly.

I love interior design. This was absolutely confirmed when I interned for an interior design firm last summer. Words cannot express how grateful I am for having had the opportunity. Watching custom furniture be designed and manufactured before my eyes excited me so much more than bunkering down with 5 chairs, sand paper, and 8,125 staples.

All this is just an effort to be transparent. My goals have changed and so will this little blog. My hope is that instead of random posts about chairs, what I share will become a little more streamlined and truer to my goals. I hope you’ll enjoy it more too!

In the words of a friend, so here we are. We will see where it goes…

design school

This summer I took a little peek at schooling at New York School of Interior Design by taking an introductory class. At the conclusion we shared our inspiration images, architecturally altered floor plan, furniture plan and samples for a selected room…

I loved it! So much so that I’m enrolled in another class right now.

Have you thought about going back to school for something completely different than your current career? I would love to hear!

autumn

I did my disappearing act again. In my hiatus school started (which means exhaustion returns), summer ended, and then it snowed. Time is flying. Inspired by this lovely color combination, let’s attempt to hang onto autumn just a bit longer… shall we?

I’m hoping to take photos of the striped chairs as a pair this weekend and I’d love to share about my design classes next week… I’ll be back (but it won’t be two months this time!)

hurricane chair

I started this chair while bunkering down for Hurricane Irene. A sweet lady picked it up a few weekends ago and I’ve been meaning to share ever since! (pardon the awful photos)

The frame needed some repair and the seat needed lots of cushion but after that, with a few coats of Martha Stewart’s Bone Folder, metallic linen from Gray Line, and some gold leaf detailing… she’s done!

summer’s end

These past few weeks have been busy but I’m making every attempt to enjoy the last moments as summer ends…

Morning bike rides to lower Manhattan.

Jam-making and a tea party with friends.

The US Open with my family.

And crossing off the “CHAIR TO DO” list… almost. Will share soon!
